Hargrove will be Inducted into NBC Hall of Fame

Mike Hargrove has brought a great amount of media attention and credibility to the National Baseball Congress. Saturday night he will be rewarded for it. The NBC will induct the second year BJ manager into their hall of fame Saturday night before the Bee Jays play the Midnight Sun Goldpanners. Hargrove played for the BJ's in 1972 and managed them to a fourth place finish at the NBC World Series last year. He joins former BJ manager Bob Cerv and former BJ pitcher Ron Guidry on the in the NBC Hall of Fame. This year's BJ's will play in the NBC World Series. The BJ's are 27-18 overall. The BJ's were rained out at Dodge City last night but invited them to play at Liberal. Dodge City didn't make the trip and Jayhawk League Commisioner Bob Considine says that makes it a forfeit which would make Liberal 18-14 in the Jayhawk League. Bee Jay General Manager Bob Carlile says the NBC told him the Bee Jays will open play in the NBC Tournament Tuesday night and would play Friday if they were able to win. Liberal's game Saturday night against the Goldpanners is part of the NBC World Series schedule, but not part of the tournament. A Night of Nostalgia at Brent Gould

From the ESPN cameras on opening night, to Bob Cerv Night, to Tanner Rindels game winning hit on the 4th of July, to a night of nostalgia with Fairbanks in town, it was a memorable summer of baseball at Brent Gould Field this summer. Liberal beat the Midnight Sun Goldpanners 8-4 in front of a near capacity crowd at Brent Gould Field Tuesday night. But the big story was the two program's meeting in Liberal for the first time since 1975. Longtime Fairbanks general manager Don Dennis and long time manager Jim Dietz have been touring the mountain and midwest states with this team since July 5. The Goldpanners won two NBC titles at Liberal's expense in 1973 and 1980. Before the game Matt Friedrich was named the BJ Director of the Year and Oklahoma State's Brett Davis was named the BJ player of the year. Friedrich just spent his first year on the board. Davis is 4-1 on the mound for Liberal. BJ manager Mike Hargrove spoke to the crowd. "During the two years Sharon and I have been in Liberal, the people we've met around town and the players are all good people," Hargrove said. "We want to thank you and the ball players for coming out and listening to coach (John) Martin, coach (Galen) McSpadden, and I this summer in hot weather screaming and hollering at them and kick them in the butt and hear the players say yes sir, yes sir, I will and they have every day. You've got a good thing here and need to keep it going."  Liberal won the game 8-4 after a strong start scoring five in the first. Cal State LA's Camron Collard pitched seven innings without allowing an earned run. Louisiana Tech's Alex Williams was 5-5 with a double and an RBI. Wichita State's Mitch Caster added two hits and an RBI. Liberal is 27-18 and will play at Dodge City Wednesday night at 7:00 PM on Talkradio 1270 and kscb.net.

Dodge City finishes 16-27 overall and 5-25 in the Jayhawk. Liberal will play an exhibition game at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita Saturday night at 7:30 against the Midnight Sun Goldpanners. Lutz Ranks Bee Jays #6 All-Time and Best in Kansas

Wichita Eagle columnist Bob Lutz ranked what he thinks is the top 25 National Baseball Congress franchises of all-time in Sunday's Wichita Eagle. Lutz ranked the Bee Jays sixth on the all-time list and number one in Kansas. Other Jayhawk League teams that made the list were the El Dorado Broncos at number seven and the Hays Larks at number 16. The Nevada Griffons who were in the Jayhawk League but dropped out this year due to the cost of travel rounded out Lutz’s list at number 25.

Top 7 courtesy of kansas.com

1. Fairbanks (Alaska) Goldpanners — The six championships and six runners-up speak for themselves. No team has produced more big-name players.

2. Anchorage (Alaska) Glacier Pilots — Four titles and a bunch of near misses. The Pilots won in 1969, their first season.

3. Grand Rapids (Mich.) Sullivans — Bob Sullivan, the skipper and owner, is one of the most colorful figures in NBC history and his team won four championships, including back-to-back in 1983 and '84.

4. Boulder (Colo.) Collegians — The mystique of the team and its leader, Bauldie Moschetti, was off the charts. Won in 1966, 1967, 1975 and 1978.

5. Ft. Wayne (Ind.) General Electrics/Capeharts/ Dairymen — The most powerful early franchise won four straight from 1947-50 and added a fifth title in 1956.

6. Liberal BeeJays — Now in its 55th year of operation, Liberal has been Kansas' best team over the long haul. Won championships in 1969, 1979, 1985 and 2000.

7. Hutchinson-Wichita-El Dorado Broncos — The orange-and-black dominated the late 1980s and '90s, winning in
1989, 1990, 1996 and 1998.

Three Run Eighth Sinks BJ's

It was a non league game but a 7-6 loss which still had to sting. The BJ's seemed to have turned their season around with six straight wins. That streak was bound to end sometime, but the way Liberal lost at Junction City Thursday night had to be frustrating for the team who traveled five hours to play. Liberal led until the eighth inning when they coughed up three runs and allowed the go ahead run on a passed ball in a 7-6 loss at Junction City Thursday night. The BJ's scored four in the first and led 6-4 going to the eighth. Chandler-Gilbert's Aaron Mees blasted his third homer and also doubled. Lubbock Christian's Tanner Rindels was 2-5 with a double. Louisiana Tech's Alex Williams was 2-4 with a double. New Mexico Junior College's Josh Reyes pitched three scoreless innings in the loss. Bee Jays Stay Hot with Sixth Straight Win

The BJ's most riveting win during the sixth game winning streak came Tuesday night at Brent Gould Field. Liberal scored one in the ninth to tie and one in the tenth to beat Hays 3-2 and win their sixth in a row. In the process, the BJ's move into second place in the Jayhawk League. Chandler-Gilbert's Aaron Mees delivered the game winning hit with one out in the bottom of the tenth. His sharp ground ball inside the first base bag scored Pepperdine's Torrey Jacoby. Mees entered the game in the tenth inning as a defensive replacement. "The number one key for me in that situation was patience," Mees said. "I wanted to get up their and see a few pitches because I hadn't seen a live pitch in a while. I knew that coach put me in that situation for a reason and I wanted to take advantage. I saw a pitch to hit so I swung and thank God it stayed inside the line." Liberal's pitching continued their torrid stretch. The have allowed 10 runs during the six game winning streak. With a Pittsburgh Pirate cross checker and Texas Tech head coach Dan Spencer in attendance, all eyes were on 6'6" right-hander Bobby Doran from Seward County. The Tech signee and Pirate draftee (36th round) pitched the first four innings striking out five. San Diego's Matt Hauser pitched the last six innings striking out 10 and not allowing a run. Hauser is 4-2 after the win. "We knew it was a big game," Hauser said. "I knew I needed to pitch and I wasn't coming out of the game until we won. Coach kept asking if I was good and I said yes I'm good and I'm not coming out." Hauser made the comments after the game with a smile on his face after the win. USC's Mike Greco sparked the BJ offense. He was 3-4 with a triple, double, and single. His sixth inning double drove home Liberal's first run to make the score 2-1 in favor of Hays. Greco's lead-off triple in the ninth paved the way for Lubbock Christian's Tanner Rindels to drive home the tying run in the ninth.
Liberal is 15-13 and leads Derby (13-11) by percentage points for second place in the Jayhawk League. The Bee Jays are 23-16 overall. Hays falls to 19-14 overall and 12-13 in the Jayhawk. In the third, USC's Mike Greco and Lamar's Stephen Tucker wacked RBI singles. Greco was and Louisiana Tech's Justin Gordey were both 2-4. Bee Jays Take Two in Derby

The Liberal Bee Jays swept a two game series in Derby on Saturday and Sunday to take the regular season series 5-3. The Bee Jays won on Saturday 5-2. Don Lisi earned the victory going 5 2/3 innings giving up just two runs off of six hits. Liberal trailed 1-0 heading to the fifth inning and had not reached base all game until Steven Tucker hit a single with one out in the inning. That helped spark a five run inning that included a three-run homer over the right field fence from Hugoton native Tanner Rindels. The Bee Jays then dominated Sunday's game winning 7-1.  Bret Davis won his second game in a row over Derby lasting seven innings giving up just one run off of a wild pitch, and just six hits. Liberal got off to an early 1-0 lead in the first due to an error by the Twins. The Bee Jays then added two runs in the third off of a 2 RBI double by third baseman Mike Greco. Liberal added two more runs in the sixth as Rindels then hit his second home run in two days sending a two run shot over the right field fence again giving the Bee Jays a 5-1 lead. Bee Jays-A's Suspended Game Could Become Official
The Liberal Bee Jays game at Dodge City Tuesday that was suspended due to lighting could become official giving the Bee Jays an 8-2 victory. Several members of the Bee Jays board of directors reviewed the Jayhawk League rule book on Wednesday including General Manager Bob Carlile, and Manager Mike Hargrove. The rule book states that if a team takes the lead in an inning that a weather delay occurs that it must be suspended. The Bee Jays did score in the eighth inning right before the lighting delay began, however they already had a 6-2 lead heading into the inning.  According to the Bee Jays they feel like by rule that the game should be ruled an official game which would give the Bee Jays an 8-2 victory.  The Bee Jays informed the A's as a courtesy on Wednesday that they plan to contact the Commissioner of the Jayhawk League to ask him to make a ruling on rather or not the game remains suspended to be made up or if the game should be ruled official.

Hargrove's Pep Talk Works

Mike Hargrove's pep talk worked. The former Major League manager doesn't often give pep talks during games. But with Liberal trailing 1-0 in the middle of the seventh, Hargrove huddled the team in front of the dugout for a pep talk. It worked.
